Reds acquire Mat Latos

Everyone is the Reds Blogosphere should be happier today. The Reds made a trade, acquiring pitcher Mat Latos from the Padres. In doing so, they also unloaded one of the fans’ biggest whipping boys, Edinson Volquez.

Volquez was packaged with Yonder Alonso and two minor leaguers. I mentioned on Facebook several days ago that the Reds should only part with Alonso of they feel there is a legitimate chance of signing Joey Votto to a long-term deal. Hopefully, this is the case.

I think the trade improves the team and sends a good message to the fans. Latos should have an immediate impact. We don’t have to wait a few years to see the benefits. Many “experts” believe the window of opportunity is open for the Reds. Let’s jump through!

They gave up a lot but hopefully what everyone is saying about Latos is true. I have read a few places that he is a hot head so I really hope that is not true. Then again, who cares if he is getting guys out.

Dusty Baker is a player’s manager, so hopefully Latos will fit in. They gave up a talented pitcher in Volquez, but he wasn’t playing with a full deck last year. The two prospects were just that – prospects. No matter how talented, the odds of each becoming a Major League all-star are low. To me, the choice was hoping the club will have a chance to sign Votto, thus making Alonso expendable.
