Off-day notes
Walt Jocketty does not have any timetable as to when Joey Votto might return to the Reds. It does appear that Votto will go on a rehab assignment. “When he says he’s ready to go he’ll go, ” Jocketty said.
There also is no timetable concerning Edinson Volquez. He began throwing last Thursday off of flat ground. If everything goes well, he will probably start throwing off of a mound this week. He is eligible to come off of the disabled list on Wednesday.
Matt Maloney made his second start in place of Volquez on Friday and deserved a better fate. He had little support from the offense and suffered his first loss.
Dusty Baker was not happy when Brandon Phillips ignored a take sign on a 3-0 pitch Saturday night. Phillips was disciplined by Baker, but did start on Sunday. Most likely, Phillips was fined by his skipper.
Willy Taveras is stuck in a 0-32 slump. He was given a break yesterday, and the chance to learn from his manager.
“I’m just going to work with him today, personally,” Baker said. “When they’re on the field, I’ll be with him going over a few things. It’s just a little different voice, probably saying the same thing.”
Dusty Baker has really impressed me this year with his handling of the young players. Taveras may be a veteran on this team, but he is only 27 years old. Baker has so far managed to balance teaching the game while keeping his club in the pennant race.
